How to Make Your at-home Blow Dry Last
Because a good blow dry should carry you further than one morning.
There is something about leaving the salon with your hair perfectly blow dried-smooth, voluminous, effortless that lasts for days — and then never being able to recreate it. We hear this constantly. The good news is that longevity has less to do with luck, and a lot to do with a few small habits.
Here is exactly how to hold onto that fresh-from-the-salon feeling for as long as possible.
1. Start with the right products at WASH TIME
Longevity begins in the wash, not the styling. A lightweight volumising shampoo
and a conditioner applied mid-shaft to ends only will give your blow dry
something to work with. Avoid heavy, moisturising formulas on the root area-
they weigh the hair down and accelerate how quickly the style drops.
2. Dry your hair properly before bed
This is the one that makes the biggest difference. Going to sleep on even slightly
damp hair will undo a blow dry faster than almost anything else -the hair sets
into whatever shape it dries in, and a pillow is not a round brush. If you wash at
night, fully blow dry before bed, even if it’s a rougher version of the style.
3. Use a silk or satin pillowcase
Cotton pillowcases create friction that works against your hair while you sleep-
frizz, breakage, and a flattened style by morning. A silk or satin pillowcase
reduces that friction significantly and keeps your blow dry intact overnight. It
also helps with skin, which is never a bad bonus.
4. A loose braid is your second-day best friend
If you want to preserve your blow dry for a second or third day, put your hair into
a very loose, low braid before bed. Not tight- just enough to keep it contained
and protected. In the morning, shake it out, hit any pieces with a small amount of
heat, and it will sit almost as well as day one.
5. Dry shampoo - but apply it the right way
Dry shampoo is not a day-two emergency - it works best when applied on day
one, before the oils have a chance to build up. A light spray at the roots after your
blow dry means you are already set up for the following morning. Apply it to
clean roots, work it in with your fingers, and brush through. You will extend the
life of your style without the heavy, powdery residue that comes with applying it
last minute.
6. Finish with a cool shot
Before you put the dryer down, finish each section with the cool setting. Heat
opens the hair & cuticle and cool air closes it - sealing the shape in and adding
shine. It takes an extra thirty seconds and genuinely makes a difference to how
long the style holds.
7. Protect from humidity
In a humid climate - which, if you are in Brisbane, is most of the year -
humidity is the main enemy of a smooth blow dry. A light anti-humidity spray or
serum applied before you leave the house acts as a barrier between your hair and
the moisture in the air. Look for something lightweight that won’t flatten your
volume, just seal the style.
